About

Hello! My name is Demetrios Papakostas and I just finished my PhD in statistics at Arizona State University (ASU). I have been lucky to be under the tutelage of Dr. P. Richard Hahn. My work is mostly applied causal inference, using Bayesian and machine learning methods.

Prior to the desert, I studied physics at Villanova University. I had a lot of fun doing so, but decided to make the pivot to statistics during graduate school. In addition to research, I have really enjoyed teaching during graduate school, and here is a link to a page for my statistics for the life sciences course.

Finally, here is a page with fun class projects and R-Shiny applications to visualize some cool statistics!

Teaching

While at Arizona State University, I taught 4 semesters of STP 231 in person (statistics for the bio-sciences), 1 online semester, and served as a recitation instructor for pre-calculus. As a teacher, I developed my own course notes as well as interactive R-shiny applications. Teaching was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed learning from my many talented students!

Hobbies/Miscellaneous

In my free time, I like to walk around, play frisbee, read, watch sports, and spend time with my girlfriend and friends. Recently, I have tried my hand in more artistic ventures such as singing and woodworking with limited success!

Research/Presentations

My research specialty was in causal inference, with a focus on Bayesian methods and machine learning. My passion is in applied statistics, as my work is primarily studying real data, with some simulation studies thrown in for good measure.
